Evey
V for vendetta is a comic book written by
Alan Moore and art by Daived Lloyd. This book is about a man that fights
against the government of the united kingdom, who named V; and a girl, named Evey,
who lived a rough life when she was a kid and that’s affect her life. V and
Evey meet coincidently in the street at night when she stuck with a group of
wearied men and then V came to help her to get rid of them. And there have been
a lot of interesting details this story, which ends when V succeeds to help
Evey to get out from her past and her terrible childhood. This novel released
as a film in 2006 by the director James McTeigue and the writers Andy Wachowski
and Lana Wachowski. The story in the comic book is similar to the story in the
film; however, there were some differences between the novel and the movie
especially in Evey’s character and behaviors, which contributes in varying some
events, which makes the novel more powerful because it is more informative and
detailed than the film.
In the beginning of the story, Evey
was walking in the street and suddenly she collided with a man, who was on of
the fingerman. The fingerman is named “Right-wingers”, who were the government
secret police that behave corrupt behaviors. Then V appears and helps Evey by
fighting with the fingermen. But the differences were obvious between Evey’s
character in the novel and the film. For example, in the novel she was just
sixteen years old, an adolescents; however, in the film she looks like a young
adults in the twenties. Moving on to her behavior in the beginning of the
novel, she was walking in the street and then she asked a man to sleep with her
because she needs some money. Unfortunately this guy was a fingerman and he and
his group pushed her against the wall to kill her while she was pleasing them
to let her go and not to kill her. Suddenly, V came and fights with them using
tear gas then he carry Evey and run away. But, the beginning of the film differ
the novel because Evey was walking in the street and she collided with one of
the fingermen and he started to ask her about the reason of being her out after
the curfew and she said because her uncle is sick; then they decided t kill
her, one of them hold her from her arms and the other fingerman put the sword
on her neck so she started screaming “help” “help” and finally she was helped
by V. Based on the video Book + Movie Review - V for Vendetta, the readables
said about Evey that in the film “ she is not naïve, she is intelegente, she
knows what’s going on with her government” (readables) that makes the novel
more powerful than the film because Evey’s age guided her to do a behavior
that she shouldn’t do which guided her
also to meet V. However, in the film she was aware enough about the political
environment around her so it is not acceptable that she was walking in the
street during that time.
The second and the most important
differences are her family and her childhood between the novel and the film. Starting
with her outfit when she told V about her family and childhood, she was wearing
a sleeveless yellow dress with a blue boot; she was sitting on a green chair with
her head on her arms on a table, crying in front of a big mirror that was
surrounded by lamps. She showed V a picture of herself standing with her
parents in the eighties during the war between Poland and Russia, when her
country was under the threat of being bombed.
There was no food and the pollution was huge because of the sewers were
flooded, which had negative effects on the people. Bacteria and the viruses,
which were separated in the air, caused deaths. Her father decided to leave the
country but her mother refused therefore, they moved to a protection committee.
Her mother was a victim of this pollution and she died, Evey didn’t see her
mother because her father prevented her to see her mother’s corpse. On her
twelfth birthday, her father was arrested because he joined a socialist group
by the Ring-Wingers. Therefore, she lived in a dirty and cold hostel and worked
in a factory after she lost her parents to make a living, but the money was not
enough. Comparing to her childhood and family in the film, Evey was wearing a
dark red short sleeve dress. She told V that she had a young brother that was
killed by a virus, and after her brother’s death her parents became politicians
against the government. Then the war started in her country and her mother
suggested leaving the country but her father refused because he wanted to fight
to help his country. The fingermen killed her mother in front of her, and her
father was arrested in the same period so she left alone and she lived in a
child reclamation camp. It is clear how Evey talked about her childhood in the
novel in more detailed way than the movie. The real reason of being Evey
outside after the curfew in the film was not obvious, her face’s expressions and
her body language in the film shows that she lied to the man she saw in the
street in order to escape from him. However, in the novel she showed the reason
of asking a stranger to have a sex with her, because she had a rough life and
she needs money to live so she decided to act as the older girls, who lived
with her in the hostel, to make more money to live a better life.
And
again, I can say that her age in the novel guided her to behave a bad behavior
but in the film, she was aware enough to understand that she should not stroll
in the street in that night and the reason was not obvious, what I mean that
the film didn’t mention that she went out to ask a man to have sex with her for
money. Therefore, the comic book makes more sense than the film because it is
more convincing that a young girl that was trying to adapt in her rough
experience.
Evey in the
novel wanted to reciprocate to V because he helped her and protected her from
the fingermen. Then, he requested her to go to a German man named John Faust
and to dress up as a doll. She went to
John he was trying to sleep her but she was trying to escape from having sex
with him by distracting him because she was waiting for V to come. He came and
killed John. She got angry because she involved in a crime and she didn’t know
that she would help V to kill a person.
Therefore, she left him but she came back to him again and he promised her
that there would never be more killing again. They spent a great night
together, he blinded her and took her to a street between buildings and he left
her alone. Therefore, she went to Gordo because she had no place other than
Gordo’s place to go. She spent more than a month with him, they had sex
together; but suddenly something strange and scary happened, he told her to hide
in the bathroom, she did, but then she found him killed and lying on the floor.
She took a gun from him and she went out with a gun but a stranger blinded her
ant jailed her under a charge of attempted murder of a senior officer Peter
Creedy. In the book V For Vendetta in page 161 in the second panel, Evey said,
“ once there, I was systemically brainwashed by means if drugs and torture both
physical and psychological” (Evey 161). That shows how she suffered in the jail
because of the outrageously tutoring because they wanted her to sign a paper
that proof that she collaborated with V to kill the senior officer Peter
Creedy. In the end they released Evey and she discovered that all of that was
done by V. she went to V and she got angry because he hurt her. In page 171 in
the first frame, V told her “ you were in a cell Evey. They offered you a
choice between the death of your principles and the death of your body” (V
171). Evey was being helped by V to overcome her painful past. However, in the
film, Evey was sent to the same man in the story but she behaved differently.
She didn’t helped V because she knew that the German man would be killed by V.
Therefore she warned the German man that someone wants to kill him but he
didn’t believe her, was trying to have a sex with her, until V came and killed
him. During that time Evey escape from V because he knew from the German man
that Evey worked against his crime. Then she went to Gordo and he welcomed her.
They spent few days together. But they didn’t had sex as what happened in the
novel because she was alone in the bed. One day, the government arrested Gordo
and after that in few minutes Evey was arrested as well. She was jailed,
investigated and tutored by the government because the wanted to know some
information about V, but she didn’t helped them. After a long time of being
jailed they released her and then she discovered that everything in the prison
was not real, everything accrued by V. Based on the book Rhetoric for Radicals
the author said “Change the experience
and you change a person’s orientation to
the world”( Del Gandio 6),
that what happened to Evey by V.
He did
all of that because he want to help her to overcome the fear she struggled
there should be an easy way to do that but there was no easy way to make her
live without fear; and her reaction was “ leave me alone I hate you” (Evey). He
started reminding her about her past while she was crying, then he took her to
the roof of the Shadow Gallery to help her to relax.
Then I can say that her childhood
was a reason that makes her meet V; and also it was a reason that make her used
by V to take his revenge as what Jessy said in the Youtube video named Books vs. Movies Review: V for Vendetta -
Part 1 about Evey’s character in the novel
“she was treated as a victim because of her journey” (Jessy). Which
also, make more sense for her attachment with V and how he helped her to be a
strong lady by using her past and help her getting rid of it by facing the fear
in it. Moreover, her character in the novel was more persuasive and it was more
natural especially when she was used in a murder crime without her knowledge;
because she was too young and she wasn’t aware enough about what was happening
around her. According to the book Rhetoric for Radicals the aouthor Del Gandio
“True revolutions occur when people begin to see and understand themselves,
each other and their world in radically different ways” (Del Gandio 3); I
totally agree with Gandio’s phrase because that is exactly what happened with
Evey in the novel and the film as well but I believe that its match with her
situation in the novel also because of her age. Evey in the novel was young and
immature until she had trouble in her life after she met V, he placed her in
the situations I have mentioned above to help her overcome her life’s
difficulties by facing them, living in them and thinking about how to eliminate
them and that was the revolution and she understood. But in the film she was
older than the novel and it was not convenience enough for me and maybe for the
other views to accept that a girl in the age of matureness couldn’t understand
and find herself, it is possible but in Evey case it is little wearied. She had
trouble life since she was young and she should be learned from them when she
was younger.
Evey’s character was clear and
stronger in the book than her character in the film V For Vendetta because it
was mentioned in the novel in more detailed way. I found that her childhood is
the first throat of the chain of her rough life because everything happened to
her in the novel and the film as well was linked with her childhood. Her
childhood period was showed in more convincing way in the novel than the film.
For example, as I have mentioned above, she lived in a hostel and she hadn’t
enough money; therefore she went out and asked a fingerman to sleep with her
for money. And the whole events occurred according to this issue. And V was the
man, who changes her life to a better life.
